DR. SCOTT FELLUSS

ABOUT DR. FELLUSS

My athletic journey began as a Division 1 soccer player and team captain at Brown and Fordham Universities, where I led my teams to numerous victories and developed a passion for sports leadership. This experience laid the foundation for my diverse and accomplished career in athletics and coaching.

I am a former Ivy League Champion and Atlantic 10 Division 1 Coach. With a broad background in various sports, I bring extensive experience in tennis instruction, having trained USTA junior tournament champions, high school varsity players, collegiate athletes, amateur and professional players, beginners of all ages, experienced teens, and adults, as well as young children.

My students consistently excel in competitive tournament play and often become finalists in USTA-sponsored events. This success stems from my unique approach, which integrates rigorous academic research into my coaching pedagogy. As a University Lecturer, I apply an academic, systematic, and tactically sound methodology to tennis training, developing serious winners with a grounded yet flexible approach. My goal is to cultivate creativity, imagination, and intellectual curiosity in a student-centered learning environment, always adapting to meet the needs of my students.

Clear Communication and Expectations: I believe in the importance of clear communication and setting realistic expectations. My coaching programs are transparently structured, with detailed information provided upfront about goals, progress milestones, and performance evaluations. Regular progress updates and feedback ensure that my students and their parents are always informed and confident in the training process.

Personalized and Individual Attention: Recognizing that each athlete is unique, I conduct thorough initial assessments to understand each client’s skill level, goals, and preferences. This allows me to develop personalized training plans tailored to the individual needs of each student. My sessions are designed to provide specific, actionable feedback, ensuring continuous improvement and personalized attention.

Supportive and Motivating Environment: Creating a positive and encouraging atmosphere is a cornerstone of my coaching philosophy. I strive to foster a supportive environment where all students feel valued and motivated. Achievements, no matter how small, are celebrated, and constructive feedback is provided to encourage growth. Building a sense of community among my students through group activities and social events further enhances their experience and fosters camaraderie.

My pedagogical foundation is supported by strong academic credentials: I hold a Ph.D. in Theatre and Performance Studies from the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa and a master’s degree in English and American Literature from Mills College at Northeastern University, from both of which I graduated summa cum laude. I hold a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, demonstrating my commitment to discipline and excellence in all areas of life. Despite my diverse commitments, I prioritize effective time management to remain fully available and dedicated to my students.

Whether you are a beginner looking to develop foundational skills, a competitive player aiming to refine your game, or an enthusiast seeking to blend physical and intellectual growth, my coaching offers a unique and effective pathway to achieving your tennis goals. My students appreciate the balance of rigorous training with personal development, and their feedback continuously shapes and enhances my methods.

I am committed to maintaining open communication with my students, regularly seeking feedback and being willing to adapt my methods to meet their needs. This ensures that my coaching remains relevant, effective, and student-centered. My proactive approach to reputation management and my dedication to excellence have earned me the trust and respect of my students and peers.

Oh! Blessed rage for order, pale Ramon,
The maker’s rage to order words of the sea,
Words of the fragrant portals, dimly-starred,
And of ourselves and of our origins,
In ghostlier demarcations, keener sounds.
— Wallace Stevens, "The Idea of Order at Key West"
